I heard Gem on John Gormley Talk Show Radio a short while ago, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. I went and bought your book “Asian Adventures with the Active Poor” and am almost done reading it. (It took a while for the book store to even find it – it was hidden away in the office somewhere. Bookstore was Indigo in Saskatoon!) Your family is an inspiration and are doing an amazing work! I too believe that we, the rich in our comfortable existence, MUST be involved in providing for those too poor to change their own lives. Education is the first and best way to do that, What an inventive plan you developed, not only improving the lives of the mothers but giving the whole next generation a hope for their future. God bless!

I should have mentioned in my last comment that my daughter Heidi, who presently lives in Victoria British Columbia, and is a pediatric nurse, will be going to Bangladesh in January to spend three months volunteering in one of the universities, to teach nursing students there. She will be going with two other nurses from Victoria. There will be many medical professionals who will be involved in this project. I plan to pass your book on to her and I know she will be truly inspired, as well. She and I have a kindred heart when it comes to reaching out to the poor. One of our other sons, Tony, will be spending his second summer at St. Innocent Orphanage in Rosorita, Mexico where he will supervise groups that come throughout the summer and build a small 2 room house for poor families in Mexico. 4 of our 6 children have spent time in Mexico in this same work. So like you, our family has a deep concern for the poor around the world.

Thank you for your encouraging comments, Lois, and for the information about your admirable family. It would be very nice if we could connect with Heidi when she’s in Bangladesh, or when we’re next in Victoria.

      with best wishes,

I met Gem and Tanyss 3 days ago at a Rotary Club Luncheon Meeting in Pincher Creek, Alberta. I heard an amazing story of a Canadian Family who are making a difference in the world. I purchased 6 copies of their book “South Asian Adventures—-” to donate to libraries in southwestern Alberta communities. I feel prompted to
share their story with anyone who will listen. They exhibit the level of love that is so badly needed in the world. I
feel motivated to support their cause in as many ways that I can.

    Keep up the good work.
    Earl Shields
